Nasal polyps are soft (jelly-like) growths emanating from the paranasal sinuses or the surface of the nasal mucosa. They are resultant from the processes of various diseases in the nasal cavities. The polyps originate near the ethmoid sinuses (located at the top of the inside of the nose) and grow into the open areas. They are usually visible inside the nose.
When nasal polyps develop, nasal airways may become blocked creating breathing difficulties. Polyps can also block drainage cavities, creating stagnant secretions that stay in the sinuses. And when sinuses become infected as a result of these secretions, it leads to sinusitis. When nasal and sinus tissues get irritated or inflamed, Rhino-sinusitis develops.
Rhino-sinusitis refers to the inflammation of the tissues of the nose (rhino-) and sinuses. Nasal Polyps (tissue swellings) can form within the nose and sinuses; these are responsible for many symptoms described by patients with rhino-sinusitis.
Most frequently, people suffering from Rhino-sinusitis (nasal and sinus polyps) often feel very uncomfortable and usually suspect they might have flu.
