Patch Testing

Patch testing is an investigation which is appropriate for patients with contact dermatitis. This is a rash which commonly affects the hands or the soles of the feet and is often caused by an allergy due to prolonged contact with a substance eg. nickel in ear-rings, hair dyes, cosmetics and jewellry.

Note: For patients who are unsure whether patch testing is an appropriate test, we suggest arranging a regular consultation with one of our doctors who can then assess your problem and advise accordingly.

What Does The Patch Test Involve?

The European Standard of twenty-three different substances, each in the form of a cream patch is placed by our doctor on the upper back of the patient. Two days later these patches are removed and after another two days the skin is assessed for an allergic reaction. If present, it confirms an allergy to a specific substance which will then require avoidance as advised accordingly.

The initial visit with assessment and patch application occurs on Monday, with the two subsequent visits taking place on Wednesday and Friday of the same week.

The Monday consultation requires 45 minutes, while the Wednesday and Friday visits last 15 minutes each.
