Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid. This is produced synthetically, so is not derived from any animal or human products. It is biocompatible and biodegradable.
Sculptra is used to replace lost volume due to aging thus correcting tired drawn appearance. Other uses are for deep folds and wrinkles e.g. nasolabial folds - From nose to angle mouth, smile lines. In addition it can be used in treatment of scars. The contour of the face can be improved e.g. cheek contouring.
More than 150,000 patients have been treated worldwide. No adverse effects reported.
Sculptra works by immediately filling out the wrinkle and volume defect. Within a few days the body absorbs the water in Sculptra with a slight increase in wrinkle depth again. Thus the initial plumpness is short-lived and returns to normal in 24- 48 hours. After the 3rd injection at the fourth month there is a soft build up of connective tissue, smoothing out the wrinkle. After 6 weeks an improvement may be seen.
No patch test is needed prior to Sculptra
This depends on the individual. However most individuals need three treatments spaced 1 month apart.
Yes, Sculptra can be administered after other treatments
Potential side- effects are injection related, i.e. slight discomfort, redness, bruising, swelling. Nodules or bumps under the skin may appear, however these are minimised with massage during and after treatment.
Sculptra lasts up to 2 years.
Local anaesthetic cream is applied to area in order to minimise the discomfort of injections. The needle used is very fine so discomfort is minimal. There are multiple injections. Afterwards your face is massaged for few minutes in order to reduce nodules.
Ice packs may be applied to reduce bruising and swelling.
Sculptra works better with massage. It is recommended to massage the treated area for 5 minutes five times a day for five days. This helps the product to work better and also minimise the chance of getting nodules.
