Sexual Health

Sexually transmitted infections are common, often are present without any symptoms and can be very serious. Any sexually active person may be exposed to a sexually transmitted infection. If you suspect you have an infection or are at risk it is advisable to get it checked out as soon as possible. Most treatments are simple and painless and you do not have to be admitted to hospital. Screening and treatment are confidential and non judgmental. The staff in the clinic are trained to treat sexually transmitted infections in an understanding and helpful way so there is no need for you to feel embarrassed. If you are pregnant and think you may have picked up a sexually transmitted infection it is particularly important to get it checked out and treated as soon as possible. The Slievemore Clinic provides a private, comprehensive Sexually Transmitted Infection service which includes full STI testing, advice and necessary referrals or prescriptions. Screening usually includes testing for Chlamydia, Gonococcus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis and Trichomonas Vaginalis as well as a smear test if one is due. Other infections that may present include genital warts and genital herpes.

Booking for STI screening
Please inform the receptionist when you book that you are attending for an STI screen so that you are given enough time as this is a longer consultation. You need to arrive with a full bladder (do not empty your bladder for at least four hours prior to the appointment) as this is important for the Chlamydia screening test. In addition one of the tests needs to be transported to the lab promptly so we advise all female STI screening to be done before 1.30pm to ensure that we can get the sample in time to the lab.

Genital Warts
The Slievemore Clinic offers cryotherapy treatment for genital warts. The cryotherapy is usually covered by VHI, Quinn or Aviva insurance so if you have private health insurance remember to bring your details to avail of this.

Cervical Cancer Vaccination
The Slievemore Clinic offers advice and administration of cervical cancer vaccines at a competitive price. The initial consultation and first administration of the vaccine is with one of our doctors, the two follow up vaccines are administered by our nurse. We are happy to discuss whether the vaccine is suitable for you/ your daughter on an individual basis.
